Itinerary and trek details:

Day 1 : Arrive to Marrakech Airport

Flight to Marrakech. Welcome at the airport by your guide and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Marrakech – Bougmez

Departure by minibus by the Azilal road, picnic on the way, then continuation by a small mountain road towards Aït Bougmez, at 1800m altitude. Installation in the cottage, welcome tea then departure for a first stroll, discovery of the villages and visit of the collective granary of Sidi Moussa. Return to the gîte for dinner.

Day 3: Aït Bougmez – Arous

Meet the team of mule drivers who will accompany you during the trek. Quiet descent of the Aït Bougmez valley, through apple fields, discovery of dinosaur tracks. Continue to the valley of Arous and the characteristic adobe villages, before joining the troglodyte houses of Assif N’Arrous and the sheepfolds of Ikkis. Discovery of pastoral life and installation of the first bivouac near the sheepfolds, at 2100m.

Day 4: Azibs Ikkis – M’Goun “Tarkedit” base camp

Climb by a nice winding path through the sources of Ikiss. Continue the ascent to the Arouri pass (3400m), panoramic view of the entire M’Goun range and the Tarkedit plateau, then descend to this pasture where the herds from the south graze. Installation of the bivouac at 2900m, near the sources of the Tessaout. In summer this plateau is occupied by the tents of the nomads and their herds.

Day 5: Ascent of M’Goun (4068m)

Early in the morning, ascent of the highest point of this region of the central High Atlas, path in successive stages, pursuit along a ridge line to the summit, the view going far south. Descent by the same path. Installation of the camp at the exit of the plateau and sheltered from the wind at 2750m. Optional ascent (possibility of making the mule track in 1 hour walk).

Day 6: Ouandrass – Tessaout Tasgaiwalt

Continue on the transhumance path, discover the chasms and continue towards the tizi n’Asdrem (3200m) then descend into the Tessaout valley. Installation of the bivouac at the edge of the wadi, just before the village of Tasgaiwalt at 2200m.

Day 7: Tessaout Valley

Pass by the large village of Amerzi, quiet descent along the narrow Tessaout valley on a well-marked track. Discovery of beautiful hilltop villages: Ichbaken, Aït Hamza, arrival at Aït Ali Nitto. installation for the night in a gîte at 1850m.

Day 8: Aït Ali Nitto – Megdaz – azibs Taoudja

We cross the village of Megdaz at 1950m, “one of the most beautiful in the High Atlas” with its superb two-story houses, its high red granaries and its century-old walnut trees. Continue to the tizi Awrghiz (2400m), to reach the village of Tagoukht (2020m). Continue the climb towards the Taoudja azibs, installation of the bivouac near a source at 2400m.

Day 9: Azibs Taoudja – Lake Tamda

Balcony path in the direction of Tizi n’Fedghat, then climbed by a ridge line overhanging the Igarnane valley, before crossing the Tamda pass at 2800m on the “east” fringe of Jebel Anghomar. Descent to the glacial lake of Tamda, the highest altitude lake in Morocco (2550m). The contrast of the blue lake and the arid mountain that surrounds it is a rare sight in these latitudes. Installation of the bivouac by the lake.

Day 10: Tamda lake – Anghomar djebel (3608m) – Ounilla valley

Optional ascent of the Anghomar djebel (3608m). The ascent is tough, but its arid, pristine and isolated summit offers you a splendid 360 ° view especially on the south of Dades and the steppe of Ouarzazate. Descent into the beautiful valley of Ounilla, installation of the bivouac with oleanders in the middle at 1950m.
Duration of the stage with ascent: 8:30 – elevation + 1060m, -1650m.
Duration of the stage without the ascent: 4h – elevation + 100m, -600m.

Day 11: Tighza – Telouet – Tinzazmine

Passage to the village of Tighza. We discover the upper Ounilla Assif valley, its crops, walnut trees and almond trees. A climb leads to a desert plateau, then the village of Telouet which houses the former home and beautiful Kasbah of Pasha Glaoui, continuation and installation of the bivouac near the village of Tinzazmine at 1850m.

Day 12: Tinzazmine – Tichka – Afra

We cross several villages before crossing the tizi n’Mahboub (2650m), beautiful view of the two slopes. Descent near the Tichka pass “it’s supply day”, because crossing the national road that connects Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Passage at the foot of the waterfalls towards the Afra plateau, installation of the bivouac in the meadow at 2100m.

Day 13: Afra Gorges – Agdal n’Yagour

Long day of descent with the crossing of many typical villages and the beautiful gorges of the Afra valley, Tidsi, Assats, until the wadi Zat. Passage to the village of Azgour (1400m) then climb on the Yagour plateau, characterized by its numerous rock carvings from the Neolithic period. Installation of the bivouac after the village of Ouarzazt at 2100m. Nice atmosphere in the evening when the herds return to their pens.

Day 14: Yagour – Ourika – Tikhfert

Total immersion in this pastoral universe, beautiful atmosphere along the meadows. Continuation of our route to the Yagour pass (2300m), then by a transhumance path. Descent into the Ourika valley, then climb into the thuja and holm oak forest. Installation of the bivouac in the red mountains of Tikhfert at 1700m.

Day 15: Tikhfert – Timichi

A mule track allows us to reach the top of the Ourika in parallel to the deep gorges, then continue on the balcony from village to village: Tadrart, Anfi, Tiourdiou, Timichi, discovery of crops on the terrace. Installation of the camp in the fields at 1850m.

Day 16: Timichi – Iabassen – Tachedirt

A long climb via the beautiful village of Iabassen, one of the highest sedentary villages in the Atlas (2300m). Continuation of the climb to the tizi n’Tachedirt (3172m) then descent and installation of the bivouac in the terraced fields, opposite the village of Tachedirt at 2300m.

Day 17: Tachdirt – Aremd – Neltner Toubkal base camp

Discovery of a series of villages in the valley: Ouanskra, Tamguist, Timghrine. Climb to the Tamatarte pass (220m), then a sometimes steep balcony path allows us to reach Aremd. Picnic break and continuation of the route towards the marabout of Sidi Chamarouch, “site of pilgrims” nestled at the foot of the arid slopes, towards the base camp of Neltner. Installation of the camp well before the refuge at 3000m.

Day 18: Ascent of Toubkal (4167m)

Early in the morning, the ascent of the highest peak in North Africa is done without difficulty, by the classic route, a winding path progressing in successive stages towards the geodesic point of 4167m. Very wide view of the Anti-Atlas, the pre-Saharan massifs and the plain of Marrakech. Descent by the north path over the waterfalls, return to the same bivouac.
Optional ascent, possibility to stay at the camp.

Day 19: Ascent of Ouanoukrim (4088m) – descent to Imlil

Sports stopover. Climb by the austere valley of the needles direction tizi n’Ouagane (3750m). A “path” winds along the ridge and gradually disappears.
Around 3850m, it is sometimes necessary to use your hands to go from one block to another and in the scree (these passages do not, however, require rope) arriving at the top panoramic view of the Anti-Atlas massif to the south. Long descent and passage back to Neltner, then continue to Sidi Chamharouch and the Imlil basin (1750m). Dinner and overnight accommodation in a gite.
Optional ascent, possibility of making the easy journey of the mule team: 4h descent only (elevation -1300m).

Day 20: Imlil – Marrakech

Breakfast on the terrace of your gîte, last 2 hour stroll in the villages, before the transfer back to Marrakech by minibus. Arrival at the end of the morning. Installation at the hotel, free meals.
